The Universe Will Test You

I was speaking with a good friend of mine recently and she is going through the process of making a few changes (moving, looking into a new career, improving her health). She mentioned how it always seems like when she wants to do something the process is much more difficult than it ought to be. It seems as though things come easier to other people but she always has to go through extraordinary difficulty, disappointment, and frustration for the same things.

She’s not the only one in my network who feels this way. I’ve heard the same thing from some other close friends, relatives, colleagues, and especially myself. So why are the things in our life so difficult? How come I can’t get that parking spot close to the store? Why does someone else have to get it? Why is it when I drive the speed limit there’s always some jerk who flies by me recklessly who never gets a ticket, but the moment I rush a little a cop wants to pull me over? Why are my simple goals of losing weight destroyed when I just look at a desert, while others seem to have no problem at all?

“You can’t cheat the grind… it knows how much you’ve invested. It won’t give you nothing you haven’t worked for.”

There’s a simple answer to this. The universe will test you! It will test you to see if what you say you want is what you really want. What do I mean? As soon as our hearts desire something the universe will measure the value of our hearts’ desire and place a price tag on it. The price includes a subtotal of effort along with a few taxes: persistence, dedication, perseverance, failure, frustration, life lessons, gained wisdom, challenges, and discomfort. We must decide if it is worth the price.

It is paid in non-refundable installments, and can only be redeemed once paid in full. Before we think others must have received a discounted price on their wants, we should consider that these transactions are not conducted out in the open. We don’t really know the price others have had to pay for these things; the relationships they had to pass up or leave, the losses they’ve suffered, the self-education they went through, the mentors they’ve acquired, the disappointments they’ve had, the time they’ve put in, the connections they’ve made. These are often done unbeknownst to others, but they are paid nonetheless.

Must everything be work? To get what our hearts truly desire, there is no escaping hard work. Every once in a while we’ll get lucky like that guy who blitzed pass you on the highway recently who didn’t get a ticket for driving like an idiot! There is also a loophole: When we are working a labor of love (which means that we absolutely love what we do) then the work really doesn’t seem like work. It is very fulfilling.

So what is our response to the universe? Screw you! Make my life easier? The solution, though, always falls back on us. We can make our life easier by simplifying our decisions. What do we want most? When we understand this then we become completely oblivious to all else and our focus is singular, which will allow us to do that which is fulfilling. We are not bothered by what we don’t get (just like we’re not too often bothered by all the other things in the store we didn’t buy), but we are more concerned about what we are already getting.

I hope you are encouraged by reading this. I hope you realize that you are not alone in the struggle. I hope that you have more of a singular focus as a result of time invested here. There are obviously more complexities to life, but ultimately it is our choice to allow those complexities into our own lives. Be blessed, and be ready to enjoy the price of success.

Do you ever get a gut feeling about something? I was fascinated to learn that our gut and the health of our gut plays a huge role in how we feel.

Almost as much, perhaps even as much, as our minds do.

We spend all our time working our brain and the rest of our body to boost our emotions, but we may be ignoring half the cause of problems. Isn’t it exciting to think that we can literally feel happier and emotionally stronger, even boost our immune system and overall health, just by taking better care of our gut?

If you’re feeling down, anxious, depressed, or just want a big old boost of happiness-inducing serotonin, it turns out your gut most likely has a huge influence over it all.

The little friends in your second brain

You’ve probably heard of our friends the ‘good bacteria’ battling it out against the ‘bad bacteria’ in our digestive tract – our second brain. Well, the state of these micro flora and how well the good bacteria are doing determines a whole host of health-related factors.

For example, good bacteria decides how well the toxic by-products of your digestion are neutralized and whether harmful pathogenic bacteria or other substances are prevented or allowed to grow. And it determines how much hormone production there is and many other factors that affect the health of your immune system.

Did you know you have two nervous systems too?

That’s right. You have two nervous systems – one is the central nervous system we all know and love, which is in your brain and spinal cord. But you also have the ‘enteric’ nervous system, which is in your gastrointestinal tract – your gut.

Through this whole system your brain and gut are connected and the bacteria in your gut sends messages to the brain through the nervous system. These messages affect your mood, and you know the surprising part?

Your gut sends your brain more messages than the other way around. Your gut sends instructions on how to make you feel all day long. And since we can influence those messages, it’s something we should pay attention to, wouldn’t you agree?

Happiness, anxiety and depression

You have neurons in your gut, which is another reason we call it the second brain. And these neurons produce neurotransmitters like serotonin – the primary chemical responsible for your feelings of well-being and happiness. We all know that, right?

But here’s another surprise. Serotonin is found in larger quantities in the gut than in the brain. So let’s influence our primary serotonin-producing environment in our gut and make more of it!

You may have experienced stomach pains or irritable bowel syndrome during times of great anxiety. There’s clearly a strong relationship between anxiety and the health of our gut.

There is even a strong line of scientific work proposing that certain probiotics can affect levels of proinflammatory cytokines and tryptophan in the gut, which have been implicated in depression.

“OK, I get it! So how do I start improving my gut?!” I hear you ask.

Well, that’s the next stage of my investigation. And don’t worry, I’ll share my findings with you as I go.
